Spinal Fusions (TLIF, OLIF, PLF, ALIF)

Stabilizing spinal segments through advanced fusion techniques for long-term relief.

What is Spinal Fusion?

Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure that permanently joins two or more bones of the spine so they heal into one solid bone. This eliminates painful movement between them and stabilizes the spine.

Types of Spinal Fusion Procedures

TLIF

Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion – performed from the back through a small opening, allowing access to the disc space with minimal disruption to spinal structures.

OLIF

Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion – performed from the side, avoiding major back muscles and reducing tissue damage while providing excellent disc space access.

PLF

Posterolateral Fusion – fusion at the back of the spine without removing the disc, typically used when the front of the spine is stable.

ALIF

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion – performed through the abdomen, placing implants in front of the spine for optimal disc space restoration.

Who Needs Spinal Fusion?

  • Patients with slipped discs that keep recurring
  • Severe back pain due to spinal instability or arthritis
  • Fractures or traumatic spine injuries
  • Deformities like scoliosis or kyphosis
  • Patients whose pain hasn't improved with medicines, injections, or physiotherapy

How is Spinal Fusion Performed?

The surgeon removes the damaged disc or diseased bone, places a cage or bone graft between the vertebrae, and secures it with screws and rods. Over months, the bones heal together naturally. The surgical approach (front, back, or side) depends on the patient's specific condition and body type.

Benefits

  • Relief from constant back and leg pain
  • Restoration of stability in the spine
  • Improved ability to walk, stand, and return to normal activities
  • Long-term solution for chronic spine issues

Risks & Recovery

Potential Risks

Infection, bleeding, nerve irritation, or rarely, failure of bones to fuse (pseudarthrosis).

Recovery Timeline

Patients usually stand or walk the next day. Office work can restart in 4-6 weeks, and full bone healing takes 3-6 months. In some cases, a brace may be used for extra support.
